The F12 is so fast that the track’s divots, pockmarks, and lumps become obstacles. Entering the uphill esses at 139.9 mph, the scenery went blurry on us. Positioning the car perfectly into the first ess is critical; turn in too late or too early and the Ferrari becomes a very expensive lawn mower.
Concentrating this hard brings with it a sort of tunnel vision that’s broken only by the Ferrari leaping over the small hump where the esses transition from right to left. Another skip. Another unplanned flight in a $438,000 car.

Light steering helps mask the mass, and the carbon-ceramic brakes are strong enough to make you forget that the F12 weighs 3872 pounds. However, overconfidence in the brakes did lead to one off-track excursion that ended about 40 feet shy of the tire wall.

NISSAN QASHQAI CROSSOVE

The Nissan Qashqai is one of the quietest and classiest cars of its kind, as well as one of the most practical and best to drive. Yes, it’s more expensive than some rivals, but it's worth the extra – especially when you consider how well it should hold on to its value.

The 114bhp 1.2-litre petrol model is best suited to town driving; you have to work the engine hard to keep up with traffic on faster roads. The 161bhp 1.6 petrol is pretty brisk, but it needs a fair few revs to deliver its performance. Our favourite model, the 109bhp 1.5-litre diesel, isn’t quick, but it delivers its power smoothly and is gutsy enough from low revs. The 129bhp 1.6 diesel engine feels stronger, which makes it useful if you regularly haul around your family and their luggage.

All versions have six airbags, stability control and emergency brake assist, while a Smart Vision Pack (optional on Visia and Acenta trims, and standard on more expensive models) adds lane-departure and collision-warning systems. The Qashqai also got a maximum five-star crash test rating from Euro NCAP. An engine immobiliser helps protect against thieves.
